A composite of materials are used to establish the curriculum for our students in the Functional Academic Classroom at Hopewell Middle School. Some of the materials I use are as follows: Handwriting Without Tears, Words Their Way, Unique Learning System (ULS), News-2-You (N2Y), PCI Reading and STAR Autism Program.
Handwriting Without Tears
This program utilizes hands-on activities and multiple sensory strategies to promote proper handwriting habits.
Words Their Way
This is a researched-based program that helps students improve spelling and orthographic development. Students look for patterns in letters and sounds when given level-appropriate words to categorize.
Unique Learning System
Round Rock ISD uses Unique Learning System (ULS) as an instructional tool and progress monitoring tracking system for all FAC units.
ULS is an interactive, data-driven curriculum specifically designed for students with significant disabilities. Each month is an instructional thematic units of study based on the TEKS. The lessons are differentiated into three task expectation levels to accommodate the learning diversity in the classroom to ensure all students are able to participate in the same activity.
ULS incorporates the "GPS Tool" to use as a data monitoring system to track goals and progress. Benchmarks are used to gather baseline data in areas of reading, writing, and math.
News-2-You
Students in our class learn about current events through picture-to-text weekly newspaper articles and activities.
STAR Program
This is a researched-based program that teaches children with Autism critical skills, functional routines and communication, and social skills while applying ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) instructional methods.
PCI Reading Program
Researched-based reading program created specifically for students with developmental disabilities. The program focuses on frequently used "real" words with "hands on" activities and repetition.
